Designer Rick Tegelaar

‘An uncompromising will to experiment and a curiosity to learn new things’ describes the work philosophy of material pioneer Rick Tegelaar best.

Dutch Rick Tegelaar was born in Rotterdam in 1986 and graduated with honor in product design from ArtEZ Academy, Arnhem in 2011. Since then, he has worked as an independent designer from his atelier and design studio, working on self-initiated and commissioned bespoke projects.

Tegelaar explores and reinterprets undervalued materials like chicken wire and waste wood, seeking to create new applications for these untraditional resources. The challenge is to project new forms and qualities, and to create new aesthetics. The creative process of redefining materials and developing innovative product designs has formed the Sasi collection, which Tegelaar made from aluminium in different surface finishes. The subtle contrast between anodized and polished metal is an important design motif in Rick Tegelaars collection for Nuura.
