DINING ROOM LIGHTING

Dine in perfect light

Dining room lighting should strike a balance between practicality and ambience. This involves blending different types of lighting while focusing on the main fixture — usually a pendant or chandelier — as the star of the show. Balancing these layers will help you create a well-lit space that feels both warm and versatile.

The right light makes room for conversations

The right lighting can change the mood of your dining room, turning it into a welcoming and memorable space for any gathering. By layering light, choosing the right fixtures, and paying attention to bulb selection, you can design a space that enhances every meal. So whether you’re entertaining guests or enjoying a quiet evening with family, your dining room will always shine.

Primary lighting

The primary light in your dining room is often also your task light. They provide the room’s general illumination, setting tlhe overall tone while ensuring your table is well-lit, so your guests can comfortably see their meals and enjoy the conversation.

Mood-creating lighting

Decorative lighting brings out the best features of your dining room, highlighting architectural details, artwork, or furniture.

Strategically placed wall lights add a layer of ambient light and can highlight specific areas. They also bring a sense of coziness and sophistication to the room.

Lighting tip

Dimm the lights

Dimmable lights give you full control over the atmosphere, allowing you to easily adjust the brightness for different occasions.

Lighting tip

Height placement

As a general rule, the bottom of your chandelier or pendant should hang 76 to 91 centimeter above the dining table. This ensures sufficient light coverage while allowing for clear sightlines across the table. Hanging it too low could obstruct conversation, while positioning it too high can make the room feel disconnected.

Lighting tip

The right proportions

The size of your chandelier or pendant should be proportional to your table. A good guideline is to choose a fixture that is one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. This ensures that the fixture feels balanced and not too overpowering or undersized for the space.

If you’re using multiple pendant lights, ensure they are evenly spaced, typically 60 to 76 centimeters.
